Field Trip Transportation Fund
Families pay the entry fee for students to participate in the Field Trip - however, HOPS is responsible for transportation.
Since 2020, hiring bus drivers has been an ongoing struggle for the Holt Public School District and ALL districts throughout Michigan. So much so, that at the end of the 2023-24 school year, there were days where bussing was simply unavailable to some routes.
As a way to incentivize bus drivers to take the role - the district has raised the hourly wage for driver considerably. While this is incredibly helpful for students - especially those whose parents are unable to drive them in the morning and would otherwise miss school without the bus - it has also increased the bus transportation fees for field trips by almost double.
While families are asked to cover the cost for students to attend, we depend on donations to help cover the cost of the transportation! Any gift toward these costs is a gift of a great educational experience to students.

The FAQ's
Is my donation tax deductible?
Yes! All sponsorships and donations made to the Horizon Organization of Parents and Staff are tax deductible. You are welcome to request a receipt at any time or you may use our Tax ID when filing your annual taxes: 85-1450792.
How do you distribute these funds?
The Holt Public Schools Transportation Department bills Horizon Elementary directly for any field trip transportation costs. When Horizon receives a bill, they reach out to our organization directly and we provide them with a check to cover the costs.
Can I sponsor a specific grade level or field trip?
While we don't currently have an option online that allows you to donate toward a specific grade level or field trip option, you are more than welcome to reach out to us via our email: hops.holt@gmail.com and let us know that you'd like your donation to be designated toward a specific area. We are happy to honor your requests within reason!
What happens if you don't raise enough money to cover all transportation costs?
In a situation where the organization didn't raise enough to adequately cover the transportation costs for field trips, the Board would review our annual budget and likely dip into our savings to cover them. This would be noted for the following year and the amount of field trips offered in the future would likely be cut.
Do you report back to donors on how the funds are used?
Absolutely. We want to ensure that you know what staff members are using funds for and how they are being distributed. An easy way to review what field trips the students have had the opportunity to attend is to take a look at our Annual Report. What if you raise more money than you need for field trips?
In the case that we raised more money than needed for that school year to ensure all field trip transportation costs are covered, the Board and Treasurer would put the additional funds aside as the field trip transportation fund for the following school year.
